The problem

Every new client was approved by hand. The KYC team checked identity documents by eye and validated passports line by line. They then typed each client's details into a screening platform for AML and sanctions checks, and entered them again into a separate monitoring tool. Every document a client uploaded opened an internal review case. Clients waited, and compliance teams spent their days re-keying data.

Before

  1. 1Identity documents checked by eye
  2. 2Details typed into a screening platform
  3. 3Entered again into a monitoring tool
  4. 4Every upload opens a review case

After

  1. 1Client verifies identity in the app or portal
  2. 2Screening runs automatically
  3. 3Approved clients move into ongoing monitoring
  4. 4Expiring documents handled automatically

The decision

Automating identity checks alone would have left most of the manual work in place. I decided to automate the whole chain: identity verification, AML and sanctions screening, and ongoing monitoring, integrating Jumio and KYC6.

03

What we built

Clients verify their identity in the app or portal, screening runs automatically, and approved clients move straight into ongoing monitoring. With the compliance team, we then extended the same integration to existing clients, automating the handling of documents that are about to expire or already have.

04

The hardest call

Regulation ruled out some of the identity provider's standard features. We designed workarounds that met the rules without adding friction for clients.
